Premise 1 of Mentor Match: Community driven mentoring
Dec 1 2007, 9:59 AM EST | Post edited: Dec 1 2007, 9:59 AM EST
I just thought I'd throw this up here, so folks can weigh in. Tampa Bay Mentor Match is a work in progress, and I'm tweaking it as we grow, and things come up. (Which makes using a wiki absolutely perfect for this effort!)

The first premise of Mentor Match is that:

**All mentor agreements are private arrangements between mentors and families, and the use of common sense and due consideration to the safety and well being of all parties is completely up to families and mentors.**

I went with an informal, family driven, privately managed mentoring arrangement for several reasons:

1) I truly believe people can be trusted to make intelligent decisions about their lives,
2) over-regulating or micromanaging a good idea kills it quite effectively, and
3) I believe in the concept of community, and that with the proper nurturing, a mentoring community can rise up here, guided by basic principles of kindness, compassion and charity of spirit.

So, maybe I'm too idealistic -- but I figure it's worth a try. What do you think?

Terri
